FALLOUT LONDON DELAYED INDEFINITELY AFTER 'GAME-BREAKING' FALLOUT 4 NEXT-GEN UPDATE

With just over a week to go till the arrival of Fallout London, the developers behind the massive Fallout 4 mod have delayed its release.

The upgrade, which would have let players explore the ruins of a future London, was poised to land on April 23, but has now been held up due to the launch of the Fallout 4 next-gen update just two days after London’s release date.

"As you can imagine, this will impact us and will cause complications for our release," Dean Carter, the head of Team Folon, the voluntary group of developers working on the mod, revealed in a YouTube video on Sunday (April 14).

“The past four years of our work stands to just simply break,” he said, adding that the update will cause compatibility issues for the mod that would need to be remedied right away.

Carter said he couldn’t provide a concrete release date for London as there was no way to tell when the volunteers would be able to fix the parts they were working on.

Team Folon, which is more like a fan community project than a traditional video game company, features a loosely organised group of game developers and amateur tinkerers who have been working on London in their spare time since 2019.

“We could get lucky with a day one fix or it may happen a month from now,” Carter said.

Unlike previous Fallout games, London takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of the UK capital, giving the series a fresh, non-American feel. Devastated monuments loom large as survivors battle mutants in the shadows of a decaying Big Ben and collapsed Tower Bridge.

With Fallout fandom at fever pitch following the release of Amazon’s live-action TV show last week, players were clamouring for the ambitious mod.

However, Bethesda threw a spanner in the works by recently announcing that its long-awaited Fallout 4 next-gen update would arrive on April 25.

"We want this as close as a real-game release as we can and offer all of you the best experience that you can get for everyone, but it's just looking like this update will mean that that will take some time," Carter said.

For those hoping the delay could lead to an Xbox or PlayStation release for the PC-only mod, sadly, that won’t be the case. Carter said the update would make it even more difficult to bring London to consoles.

Still, there is some good news for players. The next-gen update will also be a boon for London, leading to performance and quality of life updates, said Carter, including widescreen compatibility.

While its hefty 30GB-40GB size means that Nexus Mods won’t be able to host the mod, PC gaming marketplace GOG has offered a "viable way" to make it available to "anyone who owns the mod on GOG, and Steam, and perhaps even Epic Games,” Carter said.
